A new era of citizen health is shaping the future of care

In this article Shaun O’Hanlon argues that the NHS needs to embrace ‘citizen health’, where patients choose the technology they want to use in supporting them to control their own health and wellbeing.

He explores some of the technologies that patients are already using, including mobile phones (over 83m subscribers in the UK, despite having a population of only 62m); apps that are used by people with long term conditions to help them manage their health; wearable technology that helps people monitor and understand their own health; technology that supports transactions such as on-line booking of appointments (184,000 appointments booked online in April 2014); and online information portals such as patient.co.uk (16m visits to this site a month). He argues that the NHS needs to make changes to workflow and processes to maximise the benefits for both patients and the health service.
