NICE recommends that structured patient education is made available for all people with diabetes at the time of initial diagnosis and then as required on an ongoing basis, based on a formal, regular assessment of need.
This guideline covers how educational interventions should be stuctured, accessed and implemented. It includes guidance on who can provide education and discusses the Dose Adjustment for Normal Eating (DAFNE) programme for people with type 1 diabetes as one means of enabling people to self-manage this condition.
