The project by NHS Hammersmith and Fulham used co-production and developed from a diabetes service user group who wanted to provide more support and education for people with diabetes, and to raise awareness of diabetes in the local community. Volunteers were recruited to undertake champion, peer educator or peer mentor roles in Hammersmith and Fulham and Harrow.
Since the start of the project in April 2011, 366 community champion events reached over 9000 people; an impact evaluation with attendees one month after an event showed 95% understood and were able to say what the symptoms and risk factors of diabetes were. 75% made changes to their diet and activity levels. 60% of those eligible for testing did ask for a test.
