This paper outlines an evidence-based approach to preventing catheter-associated urinary tract infections in older people in hospital.

It has been estimated that the per day risk of developing bacteriuria (bacteria in the urine) for patients with indwelling urethral catheters is between 3 and 6 per cent (Garibaldi et al 1980, 1982, Stamm 1998, Saint and Lipsky 1999).

In this resource, the authors explain the background to these infections and describe recommendations for minimising risk and enhancing patient safety.
