I am a patient and I need to be heard

In this 2 minute video clip, 15 year old Amy Gleeson challenges health services to think about what ‘patient-centred’ means as she describes from her hospital bed how she was repeatedly woken up to be monitored, how senseless it was to ask her questions while she was groggy, and how clinicians would exclude her from conversations that were about her with her parents.

The video caused much comment in social media, raising questions about how people are treated in hospital, and whether monitoring people ‘like clockwork’ is always necessary or helpful. This has fed into a wider debate about what person-centred care means in terms of sleep, monitoring and other issues.
