This position statement sets out the Royal College of Physicians’ (RCP) commitment to shared decision making and self-management support and describes its approach to promoting these.

Within the statement the RCP recognises that patients and carers expect to be in a full partnership relationship with clinicians in all clinical interactions and commits to working towards making this part of normal practice.
