This improvement report summarises a programme to proactively manage the care of older people undergoing surgery (POPS) at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital. The work has since been published as a guide by the British Geriatrics Society.

The rate of older people undergoing surgical procedures is increasing faster than the rate of population ageing. Surgery offers mortality and symptomatic benefits in older people but post-operative outcomes are worse than they are for younger patients.
