This evidence review finds that patients exposed to interventions that are designed to empower them demonstrated significant improvement in Patient Activation Measure scores, which correlated with increased participation or engaging in specific self-care and preventive behaviours.

Patients with higher activation scores also reported significantly better health and had significantly lower rates of doctor office visits, emergency room visits, and hospital nights.
