The West Midlands cohort study and confidential enquiry into diabetes in pregnancy resulted in this report
The regional focus, alongside the national enquiry, arose from the need to address particular challenges, such as high rates of type 2 diabetes, inequality and social deprivation. The national enquiry into Maternal and Child Health (formerly CEMACH or CMACE), published a report in February 2007, looking specifically at diabetes in pregnancy and whether we are providing the best care.
The national enquiry found that there was still suboptimal pre-conception and pregnancy care including:
- pre-conception counselling
- glycaemic control before and during pregnancy
- appropriate screening and management of complications from diabetes
- fetal surveillance during pregnancy
- postnatal care
