Empowering patients to manage and shape their own health and health care is crucial if we are going to realise the vision of a more person-centred NHS.

“Some clinical commissioning groups across the country along with the UK Renal Registry have begun to use a questionnaire (Patient Activation Measure), previously developed and tested in the US, to assess the knowledge skills and confidence people have in managing their own health and health care. Early findings from a qualitative evaluation of the measure by University of Leicester, funded by NHS England and the Health Foundation, provides an insight into how this useful tool is being implemented in the NHS along with the opportunities and challenges involved.”
